Tribute to the Late Peter Jander
  • (1954 – 2023)
  • A lifetime of depicting beauty. Master painter of light and colour.
  • Peter passed away at his home on the 31st December 2023. He was one of South Africa’s most notable Impressionist Artists although he modestly preferred to be known as a “landscape painter”.
  • Peter was born in 1954 and he grew up in Newlands. From an early age he started to paint. He was educated at SACS High School and after a short career as a physical trainer he became a full time artist in 1980.
  • With the exception of lessons with the highly acclaimed artist, Arthur Mant on colour mixing methods, Peter was an essentially a self-taught painter. Peter was significantly influenced by the great Impressionists of the past however he took his version of Impressionism onto a new level.
  • He possessed the skilful ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of a specific moment. His consuming passion and love for his work made his paintings come alive.
  • His garden scenes were his most popular. He depicted rampant garden scenes in a riot of colour.
  • In his lifetime he held over 160 one-man exhibitions as well as collaborate showing with luminaries of the art world like the late Garbriel de Jongh and Vladimir Tretchikoff amongst others.
  • Peter also had many exhibitions abroad in England and Ireland.
  • Peter exhibited and sold his work at many eminent galleries throughout South Africa.
  • Most recently Peter’s paintings have found their way into prominent auction houses such as the Bonhams Auction House in London, UK.
  • In one of Peter’s last writings, he wrote: “Without my painting I would have failed totally in life, I thank my creator for this gift.”
  • His portrayal of beauty, his love and zest for life is sorely missed by all her knew him and admired his work.
