Create the Backyard of Your Dreams: 8 Patio Styling Tips

The May long weekend means the start of Summer and unofficially marks the beginning of patio season! As Vancouver and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere begin their annual migration to the outdoors, we can’t help but reflect on our own backyard. Outdoor spaces come with a unique set of challenges like the size of the space, the terrain, and the simple fact that it’s outdoors and exposed to the elements. For these reasons, patios can be easily overlooked, with the furniture needing to be functional first, fashionable second and can quickly lead to a sparsely decorated patio with only the bare essentials. However, that doesn’t need to be the case! The following are eight simple tips that can help you turn your backyard into an oasis – let’s put the Eden back in garden.

Make a Game Plan

No matter the size of your outdoor space, it’s helpful to think about what you want out of the space and what would you get the most use out of (especially if you’re working with a small backyard or balcony). Living, dining, entertaining, space for the kids – you may need to prioritize and map out the different areas. For these reasons, you may want to purchase the large statement pieces first like the seating (sectionals, cabanas, sofas, etc), to effectively prioritize your use for the space. Afterwards, you can style around it by adding the other necessary functional pieces, followed by the decor. Although the patio pictured above is quite sizeable, the 3-seater sofa and many armchairs are also sizeable. By purchasing those items first, you can effectively ‘reserve’ the space for those items and then fill in the blanks afterwards.

Divide and Conquer

As mentioned above, it can be useful to divide the space into functional zones to add order and intention. To create a visual boundary, trying using a rug or a cluster of plants to divide the lounge area, while a narrow console table (doubling as a minibar) can section off the dining space. If gardening is a big focus for you, cluster your pots into one corner to create a micro-nursery. The big plants behind the sofa in the photo is acting as a screen or divider from this living area to the rest of the backyard.

Keep a Neutral Colour Palette

To keep it simple, use a neutral colour palette with natural tones like wicker and white textiles. Afterwards, it’s easy to add some interest with pops of colour from a pouf, a rug, or cushions. Colour can easily overwhelm a small space, so best to build it up slowly with smaller pops instead of going too big too soon. Just like in the photo, the neutral colour palette of white and wicker (with a graphic black and white rug) is the base to the brightly coloured throws, cushions, and plants.

Multi-Functional Pieces

Pieces that can do double duty are perfect for your outdoor area, especially if you’re working with a small space. A stump or pouf works great as a side table or a stool for extra seating (as seen in the photo above). Other great multi-functional options can be a bench with hidden compartments, a storage ottoman, nesting tables that can expand when entertaining, or a console table that can be used as a mini bar. These are great options when wanting to keep clutter to a minimum or wanting to maximize your space.

Entertaining Space

When entertaining, create a dedicated spot for serving food and drinks (like a bar cart, console table, or sideboard). A “serving zone” adds style and function, while making it easier for guests to find a drink or snack. Add a thoughtful tablescape to the dining table by using durable yet stylish dinnerware, pairing them with woven placemats for some texture, and finally using linen napkins over paper ones for a more refined look and better wind resistance (pictured above). Finally, use a tray to organize condiments or utensils keeping the setting both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Go Vertical

In a smaller space with a limited footprint, take advantage of what you can by going upwards. Create some visual interest upwards by using wall planters, sculptures, fountains, and outdoor art, much like how a gallery wall or artwork does indoors. In the image above, a half pergola creates visual interest and a private leafy nook in the yard.

Lighting

Lighting makes a big difference in creating a warm environment and cozy ambiance. Layering your lighting is a key to a put-together look, so aim for a combination of ambient lighting for mood, task lighting such as low-level patio lights for practicality, and soft accent lighting to emphasize key features. Install hardwired sconces near entrances for consistent illumination, while using lanterns on tables or along pathways and incorporating fun lighting options like string lights or funky lanterns for whimsy. Candles (real or LED)  provide a soft, flickering light that creates a cozy atmosphere. Consider using hurricane candle holders or glass holders to protect flames from the wind while adding a decorative element. The layered lighting look in the image above brings a level of coziness and warmth that can’t be replicated with one lighting style.

Accessorize

With all the practical items out of the way, it’s time to have some fun and add some personality with accessories. For some colour and coziness, add an outdoor rug which can help complete a space and help divide a large area into different zones. Your outdoor space is an extension of your living room, so add some comfy throw cushions and blankets to up the coziness factor. Mix different textures within the same colour palette for a modern look. Greenery is a natural addition to your patio as they help bring colour and texture. Invest in some chic planters of varying sizes to add dimension, for example larger ones to anchor the seating area while using smaller ones on tables or along pathways. Alternatively, you can use 2-3 strategically placed plants in supersize planters to create more impact rather than many smaller ones. The most important step is to bring in personality! Twinkle lights, playful decor, anything whimsical and joyful. Colourful poufs, whimsical lanterns, lawn ornaments – these extra details give charm and make the patio feel like an extension of you.
